1. The calculations are based on the rider’s dynamic riding position.

Fitting involves taking many measurements of the body. These measurements are usually taken while the rider is in a stationary position on the bike under no load. One example would be knee bend, where measurements are taken at the top and bottom of the pedal stroke.

The Retul sensor takes measurements throughout the entire pedal stroke, under load, in real time. Multiple angles are recorded simultaneously. The end result is a complete assessment of the riders positioning in conditions nearly identical to actual riding.

2. The system virtually eliminates any human error when taking measurements.

Retul eliminates the need for a goniometer (a device akin to a protractor to measure various angles of body parts.) Unless a fitter is highly skilled and has training in anatomy and kinesiology, consistent results with a goniometer are mediocre at best.

With Retul, LED markers are placed on various points of the body. The Retul sensor records the positions of these LED’s and calculates the distances and angles, numerous times per second, and reports an average measurement. These results are very accurate.

3. The system works in three dimensions.

Fitting sessions also have monitoring segments, where the fitter watches the rider riding on a training device. Some recent fit sessions include video recordings of the rider. Even with video it is very difficult to see lateral (side-to-side) movement of knee.

The Retul sensor captures data in all three dimensions. It tracks the lateral movement of the knee and hip, throughout the entire pedal stroke. The results are displayed graphically on screen and are useful for determining the need for cleat adjustments or shims.
